About the Kilimanjaro Day Hike

If climbing Mount Kilimanjaro has been on your bucket list but you lack the time or budget for a full trek, this one-day hike is the perfect alternative. You’ll reach high altitudes and experience incredible views of Africa’s tallest peak, Mt. Kilimanjaro (5,985m), without the full cost of a multi-day trek.

What to Expect on the Kilimanjaro Day Hike

The trip begins early, around 5:00 AM, from Arusha (or earlier to avoid traffic). Depending on your accommodation, the journey to Kilimanjaro National Park will take 1.5 to 2.5 hours. After breakfast, you’ll drive to the Londorossi Gate on the western side of the mountain, where the hike starts at an altitude of 2,100m.

The hike involves a steady ascent of over 1,000m through tropical forests, where you may spot wildlife like colobus monkeys and crested turacos, with the possibility of hearing or even seeing elephants. The hike will take you to the Shira Plateau (3,600m), a 500,000-year-old volcanic caldera and a UNESCO World Heritage Site. You can choose to stop for lunch here or continue to Shira 1 Camp, Lion Gorge, and the Shira Pinnacles. On a clear day, you’ll get stunning views of Kibo Peak and the glaciers.

How fit should I be?

Though it’s a one-day hike, the fast pace and high elevation can make it challenging, so be prepared for a demanding experience.

What to Wear

Good, closed shoes are essential for the hike. While high heels are technically an option, they are not recommended for comfort. Due to the altitude, it’s crucial to bring warm clothing. The lower rainforests can be wet, so waterproof gear and extra socks/shirts in a dry bag are also recommended.

A single-entry tourist visa costs $50 for most nationalities, while US citizens pay $100 for a multiple-entry visa.

The eVisa process usually takes about 10 business days for approval.
