About the Materuni Waterfalls Day Trip in the Moshi Area

The Materuni Waterfalls is located in Materuni, an authentic and charming village home to the Chagga tribe. Just 15km from Moshi Town, it is the last village before Kilimanjaro National Park. The waterfall, named after the village, is a powerful and majestic sight that’s a must-visit in Tanzania. The trip from Arusha takes about two hours, while it’s only a half-hour drive from Moshi.

What to Expect at Materuni Waterfalls

In the morning, you’ll be picked up by your English-speaking guide, who will drive you to Materuni Village. The last stretch of the journey is an adventurous ride on a bumpy road, offering beautiful views of the surrounding forests. Upon arrival, you’ll register at the village office before your journey begins.

The waterfall is a 40-minute walk from the starting point, as it is not accessible by car, adding to the adventure. Along the way, your guide will share stories of Chagga culture, village life, and the local flora and fauna. On clear days, you may even spot the summit of Mount Kilimanjaro in the distance.

When you reach the waterfall, you’ll be awestruck by its impressive 80-meter height. The pool at the base offers a great spot for a refreshing swim—don’t forget your swimwear! Get as close to the waterfall as you can, but be prepared for the immense power of the water, which can feel like a mini hurricane.

Local Lunch & Coffee Tour at Materuni

After enjoying the falls, you’ll return to Materuni Village for a traditional Chagga lunch, where you’ll also have the chance to taste the local banana beer—a must-try! Following lunch, you’ll embark on a coffee-making experience. You’ll learn about the entire process, from cultivation to roasting.

You’ll also participate in grinding the coffee, all while enjoying Chagga songs and dances. Once the coffee is ready, you’ll have the opportunity to taste the fresh brew you’ve helped create.

A single-entry tourist visa costs $50 for most nationalities, while US citizens pay $100 for a multiple-entry visa.

The eVisa process usually takes about 10 business days for approval.
