About the Day Trip to Kikuletwa Hotsprings (also known as Chemka or Rundugai Hot Springs)

Kikuletwa Hotsprings, also referred to as Chemka or Rundugai Hot Springs, is one of the most picturesque and refreshing spots in Tanzania. Located in the middle of nowhere, this hidden oasis offers warm, crystal-clear waters perfect for a swim. It’s an unforgettable experience that’s definitely worth the visit. The drive from Arusha takes about 2 hours.

Your journey from Arusha begins on the main road toward Moshi, where, hopefully, you’ll catch a glimpse of Mount Kilimanjaro. After leaving the main road, you’ll take an off-road path that leads you through the African countryside, passing bushland, dry riverbeds, and iconic baobab and acacia trees. Along the way, you’ll see local tribes before arriving at Kikuletwa Hotsprings.

Once there, you can swim, enjoy the rope swing, explore the area, or simply relax and take in the beauty of the green oasis. You can rent snorkel gear to explore the underwater world and possibly spot turtles. For a more laid-back experience, spread out your towel, sip a coconut, or even enjoy a local massage.

Kikuletwa Hotsprings is home to Garra Rufa fish, also known as “doctor fish,” which nibble dead skin from your feet. It’s a natural pedicure, and since it’s free here, you can sit back and enjoy it without paying for the service! You might also spot turtles or catfish in the water.

The Confusing Names of the Hotsprings

Kikuletwa Hotsprings goes by several names, including Chemka, Rundugai, and Maji Moto, but they all refer to the same location. “Chemka” means “boiling” in Swahili, referencing how the water seems to bubble as it rises from underground. “Maji Moto” simply translates to “hot water.” Ask our local guide for more details on the origin of these names!
